Pilates Spine Corrector Session Class

Check the schedule to find out when the next Spine Corrector session begins. If the session is already happening, there may still be space for you. Contact us to find out.

This Pilates group class is designed to challenge the pelvic core strength, lengthen the spine, expand the chest, mobilize the shoulders, and to allow expansion through your entire body.  Exercises are performed on the Pilates Arc by Balanced Body (pictured above).  This is a lightweight design of Joe Pilates’ original Spine Corrector, or small barrel. The wave-like contour of the Pilates Arc supports the lower back during deep core work and can also be used to support the pelvis in a modified shoulder stand or used to assist side body elongation.

The Spine Corrector is especially effective in helping with spinal curvatures like scoliosis or learned postural habits. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 60 – 80% of adults in the U.S. have back pain. By restoring strength and flexibility to your spine, you have the opportunity to reduce pain and keep your body youthful. Good alignment practices you learn through Pilates work on the Spine Corrector can assist you in your day-to-day life and provide pain-free, healthy, and happy days.

In the words of Joe Pilates:

If your spine is stiff at 30 years old, you are old, if it is flexible at 60 years old, you are young…Fortunately, the spine lends itself quite readily to correction.  Good posture can be acquired when the entire mechanism is under perfect control.

Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to move your joints. If you wear shorts, please be sure they are fitted or have a fitted liner as some exercises require legs in the air. No shoes required. If you tend to get warm easily, consider wearing light clothing or a lighter layer just in case. Sticky socks optional.

We have water for you at the studio, but you may want to bring a bigger bottle. All props, including mats, are provided.

The spine corrector class material varies from session to session.  Expect to do deep pelvic core work, outer thigh and hip joint stability/mobilization, balance, and arm toning. We often use the Pilates magic circle for extra inner thigh and arm toning. Expect a delicious foot self-massage or other passive releases.
