Many Pilates teachers began their careers as dancers or personal trainers. I started as a visual artist and art historian. And while art history taught me a lot about the human form, I never expected I would become a Pilates instructor.
It was the arrival of my son Chester that first took me out of the galleries and into the Pilates studio. Feeling out-of-sorts and gone soft, I tried Pilates and the experience went to my core, not only restoring my body, but also boosting my self-confidence. The results were so amazing that I left the art world behind and delved into Pilates, studying with the world-renowned Romana Kryzanowska, a protege of Joseph Pilates. I was so inspired by Romana’s teaching and the method itself that I wanted to share my story of coming to Pilates. In that spirit, I wrote two books on Pilates, both aimed at helping people find their inner strengths.
I also opened a studio, one that focused on women – especially postpartum women – to help them get their bodies back while also giving them access to other support, including mother’s groups, and an in-house massage therapist. Gradually, clients who weren’t new mothers came to me, too: athletes, people looking for relief from the aches and pains of aging, cancer survivors, and people who just wanted to get in shape. I decided to meet this broader demand by taking my teaching on the road. I now commute between studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn, give private sessions at clients’ homes and sometimes run retreats in magical places. Originally from America’s Dairyland, I currently and happily reside in New York City.
